What Is a Ceramic Coating?

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that permanently bonds to your vehicle's paintwork, forming a durable, protective layer over the surface. Once cured, it enhances gloss and depth while protecting the paint from dirt, water, UV damage, chemical contamination and environmental fallout.

Ceramic coatings can also be applied to other exterior surfaces including glass and alloy wheels — providing improved water repellency, easier maintenance and added protection across the whole vehicle.

Unlike traditional waxes or sealants that sit on the surface and quickly degrade, ceramic coatings chemically bond to the paint — offering significantly longer-lasting protection and making routine washing much easier.

Wax vs Sealant vs Ceramic

Most people don't realise how significant the difference is. Here's an honest side-by-side comparison of the three main types of paint protection.

Wax
Weeks
Typical protection duration
  • Sits on the surface — does not bond
  • Melts and degrades in heat and rain
  • Minimal chemical resistance
  • Requires frequent reapplication
  • Low cost entry point
  • Easy DIY application
Sealant
Months
Typical protection duration
  • Synthetic — still surface-level
  • Moderate durability only
  • Limited hydrophobic effect
  • Better than wax in durability
  • Reasonable gloss enhancement
  • More protection than wax

Coatings Are Only as Good as the Prep

A ceramic coating is a permanent application — which means the surface must be perfect before a single drop goes on. Every Auto Reflect coating follows the same thorough six-step process.

01
Thorough Safe Wash & Decontamination

A comprehensive cleaning process removes all surface dirt, grime and contaminants. Snow foam, detailing brushes and a two-bucket hand wash ensure nothing is left that could interfere with the coating's bond.

02
Iron & Tar Removal

Specialist treatments eliminate embedded iron particles and tar deposits that regular washing can't reach. These invisible contaminants must be fully removed before any polishing or coating takes place.

03
Machine Polishing / Paint Correction

Any paint imperfections, swirl marks and scratches are corrected to create a flawless finish before the coating is applied. Applying a ceramic coating over defects would lock them in permanently.

04
Panel Wipe & Inspection

A final panel wipe removes all polishing oils and residues from the surface. The paintwork is then inspected under specialist lighting to confirm every panel is clean and defect-free.

05
Ceramic Coating Application

The ceramic coating is carefully applied by hand, panel by panel, to ensure even coverage and correct bonding across the entire paintwork surface.

06
Controlled Curing Process

The coating is allowed to cure under controlled conditions to achieve maximum hardness and durability. The vehicle is kept away from water and contaminants during this critical period.

Where We Apply It

Ceramic coating isn't limited to paintwork. We can protect multiple surfaces across your vehicle — ask about full-vehicle packages when you get in touch.

🌟
Paintwork

The primary surface — full bonded protection across all body panels. Enhances gloss and shields against UV, contamination and water spotting.

💧
Glass

Ceramic coating on windscreen and windows delivers exceptional water repellency — rain beads and clears at speed, improving visibility and reducing wiper use.

Alloy Wheels

Wheels are exposed to brake dust, road salt and heat. A ceramic coating makes them significantly easier to clean and protects the finish from corrosion and staining.

Frequently Asked

In most cases, yes. A ceramic coating bonds permanently to whatever surface it's applied to — which means any swirl marks, scratches or defects present at the time of application will be locked in. We'll always inspect your vehicle first and recommend the appropriate level of correction before the coating goes on.

A professionally applied ceramic coating typically lasts between 2 and 5 years or more, depending on the product used, how the vehicle is maintained and the conditions it's exposed to. Regular washing with a pH-neutral shampoo and avoiding automatic car washes will significantly extend its lifespan.

A ceramic coating adds a hard, 9H-rated protective layer that significantly improves scratch resistance compared to bare paint or wax. However, it is not scratch-proof — it will resist light swirl marks and minor abrasion, but deeper scratches from stones or keys can still penetrate. Think of it as armour that absorbs the everyday wear your paint would otherwise take.

Avoid automatic car washes entirely — the brushes will degrade the coating and reintroduce swirl marks. Use a two-bucket hand wash method with a pH-neutral shampoo and a clean microfibre wash mitt. The coating's hydrophobic properties make washing fast and easy — most dirt lifts off with minimal contact.

Absolutely — in fact, applying a ceramic coating to a new vehicle is one of the best investments you can make. New cars often have light swirl marks from the dealership's preparation process, so a decontamination wash and light correction are still recommended before coating. Protecting the paint from day one means it will look better for longer.

Yes. Glass coating delivers excellent water repellency — rain beads and clears at speed without needing wipers in many conditions. Wheel coating protects against brake dust and road salt, making maintenance much easier. Ask about a full-vehicle package when you get in touch.
